Introduction: Sharing My Personal Experience, So You Don’t Make The Mistakes I Made
Hey, my name is Godstime, welcome to my blog First Guide 247.
I want to share with you the first time I tried to build a WordPress blog and How I completely messed it up.
I will share how I bought the wrong web hosting, and Installed the WordPress wrongly. How I Installed random WordPress plugins I didn’t understand. My website I was building broke thrice in just one week. At some point, I even thought blogging just “wasn’t for me.”
I thought creating a WordPress blog I need to be web developer or design to install am.
But here’s the truth must people might not share with you. Blogging wasn’t not the problem, it was the process.
Once I figured out a simple technique, and a repeatable system, everything changed for me. I was able to built blogs faster. They also looked very good. And most importantly, my blog actually started making me money.
So in this guide, I’m going to walk you through exactly how I build a WordPress blog from scratch, step by step simple guide. With this guide you find out there is no confusion, everything just works.
If you follow this properly, you can build your blog completely and go live in under 2 hour. Am very seriously about this.
Step 1: Choose Your Blog Niche (Don’t Skip This)
Before you even touch WordPress or buy any web hosting, you need clarity on some few things.
First is, what’s your blog about?
And I don’t mean “I’ll write about everything.” That’s how many blogs die.
My mistake (learn from this)
My first blog was about:
- News & Gossip Media
- Football
- Health Care
- Random news
Basically, everything look chaotic in and outside of the blog.
Guess what? I got no traffic, no direction and made no money.
What I should have done instead
Pick a niche that sits at the intersection of:
- What you know (or are willing to learn)
- What people are searching for
- What can make you money
Example niches:
- Blogging & online business
- Personal finance
- Fitness & weight loss
- Beauty & skincare
- Tech tutorials
According to my research: I found out blogs with a focused niche are about 3x more likely to grow within 6 months compared to general blogs. That talks about everything. I have seen this play out again and again. Multiple times.
Step 2: Get a Domain Name + Web Hosting
This is where your blog actually start becoming real.
What is a domain name?
Your domain name is also your website name. Like this:
- firstguide247.com
Ensure your domain name, you keep it:
- Short
- Easy to remember
- Relevant to your niche
Hosting (don’t overthink this)
Web Server is where your website files are stored. While the web hosting is the service that allow your website to be accessed over the internet and where your website lives.
Now. I’ll tell you something I wish someone told me earlier:
Cheap hosting can cost you more in the long run.
My first blog I created was on a super cheap plan. It crashed constantly. The blog pages took forever to load. I lost all my visitors before they even saw my content.
What I recommend you should do
Go with a reliable hosting provider that:
- Has good speed
- Offers 1-click WordPress install
- Provides SSL (security)
I recommend using Hostinger
To learn how to buy a domain and web hosting from Hostinger, check this guide: How to Buy a Domain Name and Web Hosting from Hostinger
Once you have buy your hosting:
- Connect your domain
- Install WordPress (usually 1 click installation)
Almost instantly, your blog is now live.
Step 3: Installing WordPress (The Easy Part)
If your web hosting is using cPanel. You can install WordPress through the Softaculous Apps Installer.
If you are using web hosting like Hostinger that has it’s own inbuilt Panel. They have made this ridiculously very simple.
You’ll see something like:
“Install WordPress”
Click it and follow the prompts. It’s that simple.
What happens next?
You’ll get access to your WordPress dashboard e.g:
- yoursite.com/wp-admin
This is where all the magic happens.
Step 4: Choose a simple Theme (Don’t Overcomplicate This)
Your theme is what controls how your blog looks.
My early mistake (again)
I installed like, 5 different blog themes in one day.
Each one looked “cool” but they eventually slowed down my website or broke something.
What you should do instead
Pick a clean, fast, beginner-friendly theme.
Look for:
- Mobile responsiveness
- Fast loading speed
- Simple design theme
In FirstGuide247 am using the Elementor default theme, that’s very simple and clean.
Because here’s the truth:
A simple blog that loads fast will outperform a fancy slow one every single time.
Step 5: Install Essential Plugins (Only What You Need)
Plugins are tools that add extra functionality or features to your blog.
But listen to this carefully..
Too many plugins will cause your website to be slow thereby resulting to more problems.
I learned this the hard way. One time I had 30 plugins installed. My website was basically begging to crash and plugins started malfunctioning.
Essential plugins to start with:
- SEO plugin, use Yoast or All in One SEO or Rank Math(for Google rankings)
- Security plugin, you can use All in One Security or Admin and Site Enhancements (ASE)
- Caching plugin (for speed)
- And a Backup plugin
That’s all it. Just keep it lean.
Step 6: Create Important Pages
Before you start blogging. It’s very important to set up your foundation.
These Are Must-have pages:
- Home
- About
- Contact
- Privacy Policy
Why this matters
Google and other search engines actually checks for these.
And visitors? They trust you more when your website looks legit.
This is a quick tip
Your “About” blog page should feel human.
Not this:
“We are a company dedicated to…”
No, don’t do that.
Instead say it like this:
“Hey, I’m Godstime. I started this blog after failing twice…”
People connect with stories, not corporate or suit tie nonsense.
Step 7: Customize Your Blog (Make It Yours)
Now this is the fun part I have been waiting for.
Here what to customize:
- Logo (even a simple text logo works)
- Colors
- Fonts
- Menu
Don’t aim for 100% perfection.
I have seen many bloggers delay launching for weeks or months because they want everything to be “perfect.”
Meanwhile, someone that launched with a basic design is already getting traffic.
Been done is better than been perfect. 100% always.
Step 8: Write Your First Blog Post
This is where most people will just freeze up like a statue.
They just start overthinking everything. They might rewrite a post 10 times and that might also result for them not to publish anything.
Please and please don’t do that.
Create a simple structure for your first post like this:
- Introduction (problem + promise)
- Main content (steps, tips, or story)
- Conclusion (what to do next)
For example
If your niche is blogging, you can write:
- “How to Start a Blog in The United States”
- “Best Free Blogging Tools”
A real-world scenario
Let me say 100 people search your topic monthly.
Even if only 10 click your blog. And 2 stay long enough to read it.
That will remain 2 real humans engaging with your content.
And that’s how it all begins.
Step 9: Set Up Basic SEO (So People Can Find You)
You don’t need to be an SEO expert to set up your basic SEO settings.
Just do the basics that’s all.
You should focus on:
- Keyword in your title
- Keyword in your headings
- Internal links (link to your other posts)
- Good readability
Here is an example
Instead of you writing:
“My Blogging Journey”
You should write:
“How I Started a Blog With Zero Money”
Which one gets searched. The upper or the lower one.
Step 10: Publish and Promote (Don’t Just Wait Looking Empty)
Here’s another mistake I made early on:
I thought publishing will automatically bring traffic.
I was very wrong.
You need to push your content out there for people to actually see it.
Check ou this simple promotion methods:
- Use Pinterest
- Answer questions on forums
- Share on X (fomerly Twitter)
A big reality wake up call
Your first 10–20 posts might get very little traffic.
That’s very normal.
Every successful blogger you admire? They all went through that phase.
Step 11: Stay Consistent (This Is Where Most People Quit)
Let me tell you something without sugar coating it.
Most blogs don’t fail because they’re bad in anyway.
Most blogs fail because the owner stopped walking on it.
This is what consistency looks like:
- 1–2 posts per week
- Improving your writing each time
- Learning from your mistakes. Always remember no one is above mistakes
My Personal lesson
I once quit a blog called 9jastalkative after 6 months because I wasn’t seeing any good results.
Here is the funny thing.
If I had continued for just 2 more months. I would’ve hit huge traffic and added more ways of generating money with the blog. I know this because I later restarted and it working very well.
It was a painful lesson, but also a valuable one.
Common Mistakes to Avoid (From Someone Who Made Them All)
Let’s save you some stress and pain:
- Choosing a niche that’s too broad
- Using too many plugins
- Ignoring SEO
- Quitting way too early
- Waiting for perfection
If you avoid just these five above. You’re already ahead of 70% of most beginners.
My Final Thoughts: Your Blog Won’t Build Itself
Starting a WordPress blog isn’t hard.
But sticking with it? That’s the real game.
You don’t need:
- Fancy tools
- Perfect design
- Expert skills
You just need to start. Just keep going and progessing step by step.
What to Do Next
Now that you know how to build your blog, do this now:
- Pick your niche
- Get your domain + hosting
- Launch your WordPress site
- Publish your first post
That’s it. Don’t overthink it everything.
