Hey, welcome to another of my blog post, I hope you enjoy reading it. My name is Godstime by the way, welcome to First Guide 247.
I know you’ve been thinking about starting an online side hustle for days, weeks or months now. Maybe even years. You’ve watched YouTube videos. Saved Instagram or facebook posts about it. Bookmarked random “make money online” articles or guides at 2:17am when motivation hits different.
But still yet, you haven’t started.
I get it. I have been there.
Eight years ago, I was sitting in a tiny room with a second-hand laptop that sounded like it was about to take off like a helicopter. I wanted extra income. Not luxury. Just a breathing room for me. But I made mistakes after mistakes. Chased any shiny objects online that look like money. Quit too early. Started again and failed again.
And here’s what I learned the hard way:
Starting an online side hustle isn’t about been motivated or energized.
It’s about clarity and making the right decision.
So in this guide, I’m going to walk you through exactly how to start an online side hustle the smart way. Not the hype way you read online. The real honest way.
The Real Problem: Too Many Options, Zero Direction
You know the first thing that kills most people’s side hustle dreams?
Overwhelm. They want to do everything all at once.
Only you will be in freelancing, dropshipping. blogging, YouTube, affiliate marketing, AI services. print-on-demand, crypto and Coaching.
Too many options. So you freeze, doing nothing.
When I first started, I tried three side hustles at once. Terrible idea. I made $65 in four months and thought the internet was a scam.
It wasn’t the internet.
It was me.
I didn’t focus on one.
Let’s fix that right away. These are the steps you need to take.
Step 1: Choose the Right Type of Online Side Hustle
There are only three core categories of online side hustles. Everything else falls under these:
1. Service-Based Side Hustles (Fastest to Start)
You sell your skill.
Examples of skill you can sell:
-
Website design
-
Graphic design
-
Copywriting
-
Social media management
-
AI automation setup
-
Video editing
If you can solve a problem for someone, you can get paid. It’s that simple.
When I started freelancing, I didn’t even think I had a skill. Then I realized… businesses needed a website. I could create website. Not complex ones. But the website were good.
That was enough.
Within 60 days, I had my first client paying $150 per website. It felt very small. But it changed everything.

2. Content-Based Side Hustles (Slower, But Powerful)
You create content. You monetize attention you get.
These are the examples:
-
Blogging
-
YouTube
-
Podcasting
-
TikTok
-
Niche Instagram pages
This is what I currently do. And I’ll be honest, this one requires a lot of patience.
Most bloggers quit before 6 months of starting a blog.
Here’s a made-up-but-realistic stat that anyone in blogging understands:
Out of 100 new blogs started this month, maybe 8 will still be active after one year.
Do you know why?
Because traffic is slow at first.
In my first blog I made $0 for 5 months. I almost deleted it. Then one article ranked. I made $65 in affiliate commission in one day. That $65 felt like $65,000.
In any side hustle, momentum matters.
3. Product-Based Side Hustles (Scalable but Requires Strategy)
You sell digital or physical products.
These are the examples:
-
Ebooks
-
Online courses
-
Templates
-
Print-on-demand
-
Dropshipping
-
Handmade items
This model can scale beautifully. But it requires understanding your target audience demand first. Not vibes. Not hope. Demand.
If you’re guessing what people want, you’re gambling.
Step 2: Don’t Follow Passion, Follow Problems
This might sound controversial. But I learned this the painful way.
My first “passion project” was a health news blog.
Guess how much it made?
Nothing, zero dollar.
Because passion doesn’t always pay. Problems do.
Ask yourself these questions:
-
What are people struggling with?
-
What are they already paying for?
-
What frustrates them daily?
For example:
If someone owns a small business in California and doesn’t know how to automate customer responses, that’s a problem. If you can set up automation using tools like ManyChat, that’s money right there.
See the difference?
Solve pain or problem. Get paid.
Step 3: Validate Before You Build
This is where most beginners waste time on.
They build the logo.
Design the website.
Create business cards.
Open 4-6 social media accounts.
They have zero customers.
Let me tell you something slightly embarrassing that happened to me.
I once spent three weeks designing a perfect website for a service I hadn’t sold once. Three weeks. Fonts, colors, animations… everything was in place and was perfect.
But the reality was no one cared.
What I do now is I validate first.
Here’s how you validate:
-
Post in Facebook groups offering your service.
-
DM 20 business owners with a simple offer.
-
Put up a basic landing page and run small ads.
-
Pre-sell your ebook before writing it.
If nobody shows interest, adjust the offer. Don’t build blindly.
Step 4: You can start Ugly. Improve Later.
See to be honest, perfection is procrastination wearing a nice outfit.
Your first version will be bad It’s understandable. Mine was terrible.
My first client email had grammar mistakes all over it. I cringe when I remember it. But guess what? The client still paid for my service.
Do you know why?
Because I solved the problem, the client was struggling with.
Your first YouTube video might not look cinematic. The first blog post won’t rank immediately. Plus the first offer might not convert at 10%.
That’s okay.
Been done beats perfect, every single time.
Step 5: Create a Simple Income Plan
Let’s make this practical.
Imagine you want to make $500/month from your side hustle.
Let’s break it down.
If you’re freelancing, let me say:
-
5 clients paying $100/month = $500
If you’re selling a $25 digital product:
-
20 sales = $500
And you’re doing affiliate marketing:
-
$10 commission × 50 sales = $500
See how simple that becomes?
Most people search on google, “I want to make money online.”
No. Be more specific.
“I want 4 retainer clients paying $150/month.”
That’s clarity of what you want.
Step 6: Build a Simple Online Presence
You don’t need a complicated setup.
You just need:
-
A basic website (WordPress works great)
-
A clear offer or a service that solves a problem
-
One platform to get traffic
That’s all.
Don’t try to be on Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, and TikTok all at once. You’ll burn out, I can assure you that.
When I focused only on blogging and SEO, my growth tripled. Focus compounds results.
Step 7: Use AI as an Assistant, Not a Replacement
Let’s talk about AI because everyone’s talking about it.
How AI can help you:
-
Generate content ideas
-
Outline blog posts
-
Draft emails
-
Create scripts
-
Automate customer chats
But here’s the honest truth…
AI won’t replace the way you think.
If you don’t understand your customer on your own, no tool can save you.
Back in 2023 once generated a “perfect” sales page using AI. Looked beautiful. Sounded smart.
But zero sales.
I asked myself why?
I then found out that it didn’t speak to the real pain of my audience.
Tools can only amplify strategy. They don’t replace it, remember that.
Step 8: Expect Slow Growth (And Plan for It)
This part nobody likes it, not even me.
Your first 3 months might feel like hell, nothing is happening.
To be honest that’s normal.
Side hustles follow this pattern all the time:
-
The first month 1–2: Excitement
-
Follow by the month 3–4: Doubt
-
Then month 5–6: Tiny results
-
And month 7+: You get the real momentum
Most people into online side hustles quit at month 3.
Don’t be like most people.
If you consistently:
-
Improve your offer
-
Talk to customers
-
Produce content
-
Learn basic marketing
You will grow.
Not maybe one day. You will I can assure you that.
Step 9: Reinvest Before You Reward Yourself
When I made my first $500 online, I wanted to celebrate.
Instead, I reinvested:
-
Better hosting
-
Premium tools
-
I took courses
That decision accelerated everything I was doing.
Reinvest at least 30–50% of your early profits, and your future you will thank you.
Common Mistakes you Must Avoid
Let me save you from pain, stress and burnouts:
-
Starting 5 side hustles at once.
-
Quitting after 2 months.
-
Copying someone else’s exact niche.
-
Ignoring marketing.
-
Waiting until you “feel ready.”
You’ll always never feel fully ready .
Just start anyway.
What I’d Do If I Had to Start Over Today
If I had to start from zero today, this is exactly what I would do:
-
Pick a service (like AI automation setup for small businesses).
-
Create a simple one-page website.
-
DM 30 business owners daily for 14 days.
-
Close 2–3 clients.
-
Deliver amazing results.
-
Turn results into testimonials.
-
Build content around that niche.
Very simple. Not easy. But simple.
The Bigger Picture
An online side hustle isn’t just about extra money.
It’s leverage. It give you optionality.
It’s knowing that if something happens to your main income, you’re not stuck or broke.
And honestly? The confidence that comes from earning online hits different.
The first time a stranger pays you from another city or country… you realize the world is bigger than your immediate environment. That’s how I felt.
That feeling? is very powerful.
Final Thoughts: Just Start (But Start Smart)
If you’ve read this far, then you’re serious.
This is very good.
Don’t overthink this. Choose one model you can do for the next 7 months. Validate it, start ugly and stay consistent.
